Job description Job Title : Specialty Doctor Location : NHS Trust Hospital Reports to : Consultant Contract : Full-time/part-time, permanent Working Hours : 40 hours per week (may include on-call duties, night shifts, weekends, and public holidays) Job Purpose : The Specialty Doctor plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality clinical care to patients, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and supporting consultants in managing patients. While not part of a formal training program (like Specialist Registrars), the role allows doctors to focus on their clinical practice and develop expertise in a specific field. This position provides a balance between hands-on clinical work and professional development, and it may offer opportunities for long-term career progression, including support for completing additional qualifications or specialty exams. Key Responsibilities : Clinical Responsibilities : Patient Care : Deliver high-quality medical or surgical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings under the supervision of a consultant. Conduct assessments, investigations, diagnoses, and treatment plans for patients. Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary meetings. Carry out and supervise procedures relevant to the specialty. On-call Duties : Participate in the on-call rota as required, providing care to emergency and acute admissions. Manage urgent and routine clinical problems and make appropriate referrals as necessary. Multidisciplinary Teamwork : Work collaboratively with consultants, junior doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and other members of the healthcare team. Liaise with other departments and healthcare providers to ensure a seamless patient care pathway. Patient Safety and Governance : Contribute to maintaining high standards of patient safety. Follow NHS Trust clinical governance guidelines, including reporting clinical incidents and participating in root cause analyses. Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient records, treatment plans, and discharge summaries. Education and Development : Professional Development : Engage in continuous professional development (CPD), including attending relevant educational activities such as courses, workshops, and conferences. Stay up to date with advances in your specialty and contribute to the implementation of best practices. Teaching and Mentoring : Provide supervision and teaching to junior doctors, medical students, and allied healthcare professionals. Participate in departmental teaching programs and contribute to training initiatives. Clinical Audits and Research : Audit and Quality Improvement : Participate in clinical audits and contribute to quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing patient care and outcomes. Evaluate and implement audit findings to improve clinical services. Research : Support research activities within the department and contribute to clinical trials, as applicable. Participate in the production of research papers or case reports for publication or presentation at national/international conferences. Qualifications : Medical Degree (MBBS or Equivalent) : A recognized medical qualification allowing registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK. Full GMC Registration with a License to Practice : Doctors must be fully registered with the GMC, holding a valid license to practice medicine in the UK. Postgraduate Medical Experience : A minimum of

four years

of postgraduate experience is usually required, with

at least two years

in a relevant specialty. Relevant Specialty Experience : Previous experience working within the specific specialty of the role is essential. Membership of a Relevant Royal College

(Desirable): Depending on the specialty, additional postgraduate qualifications such as MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians), MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons), or equivalent is advantageous. Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Equivalent : For roles in acute specialties, ALS or equivalent certification is often required. Skills and Attributes : Excellent clinical judgment and diagnostic skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Leadership and management abilities, with a commitment to patient safety and quality care. Professional Development and Career Progression : While the role of Specialty Doctor is not a formal training post, it offers excellent opportunities for career development. Specialty Doctors may pursue: CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) : Specialty Doctors can apply for CESR to become consultants in their chosen specialty. This pathway allows doctors to demonstrate they have the same competencies as those who have completed a formal training program. Senior Specialty Doctor or Associate Specialist : Progression to senior roles within the specialty. Subspecialty Training : Opportunities to further specialize within a particular area of the specialty.
