Oak Ward (Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit) is a 12 bedded acute assessment unit for adults of working age (male only) based at Kingfisher Court in Radlett. The Specialty Doctor will work 10 PAs with full-time Consultant Psychiatrist, 1 Speciality resident doctor, and one Foundation Year 2 Trainee who are all based at Oak Ward. The post holder will work in a well-established multidisciplinary team, providing senior clinical input into the integrated acute care pathway. Psychiatric intensive care is for patients who are in an acutely disturbed phase of a serious mental disorder. There is an associated loss of capacity for self-control, with a corresponding increase in risk, which does not allow their safe, therapeutic management and treatment in a less acute or a less secure mental health ward. Care and treatment is patient-centred, multidisciplinary, intensive and has an immediacy of response to critical clinical and risk situations. Main duties of the job

Roles & responsibilities - Under supervision of a consultant. The successful candidate would contribute to the clinical effectiveness of a well-established team. In addition to medical staff as above, the team consists of: Clinical modern matron, team leader, registered psychiatric nurses, healthcare assistants, Occupational therapists, psychologist, recreational workers, ward clerk, and team secretary. Assessment, diagnosis, formulation and review of management plans for service users. Flexibly review and re-assess service users to assess their response to treatment and their readiness to access other parts of Acute Care Pathway. Mental Health Act Work

Meeting the requirements of emergency work, MHA assessments, and assessments of capacity, Community Treatment Orders. Presenting evidence at MHA Tribunals and Hospital Managers Hearings. Maintain AC Status and attend relevant training. About us

Qualifications

MB BS or equivalent medical qualification. MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment. Section 12/Approved clinician approval. In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice. Approved clinician status. Clinical Skills Knowledge and Experience

A minimum of 4 years' full-time post-graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two years of which to be within a psychiatry training programme or as fixed term Specialty Trainee within psychiatry or have equivalent experience and competencies. Working knowledge of General Adult Psychiatry with at least 3 years of experience. Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in adults, and to deal with crisis situations. Good knowledge of psycho-pharmacological, psycho-therapeutic, and psycho-social interventions. Very good clinical skills using a bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty. Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others. Experience in managing acute presentations. Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable service. Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA. Academic Skills Lifelong Learning

Participated in continuous professional development. Participated in clinical audit and/or service improvement. Able to use and appraise clinical evidence. Holds a full valid driving license and access to a car (Unless you have a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995). Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken. Experienced in clinical research and/or service evaluation. Has led clinical audits leading to service change. Disclosure and Barring Service Check
