Job overview This is an exciting opportunity for the post holder to join an effective multidisciplinary team. Offering enhanced support to adults with a learning disability, living in their own homes; preventing admissions into assessment and treatment units as recommended within transforming care guidance.
The post holder will join another Senior Speech and Language Therapist and a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant to offer clinical assessment and treatment to patients living in the community and offering an in-reach service to the learning disability assessment and treatment ward based in Billericay (Byron Court).
The post holder will have clinical supervision from the Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in the learning disability service and will have day to day support from the team lead in Enhanced Support Team.
The working hours of the team are 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank holidays 9am-5pm. The post holder will be required to work a shift pattern 8am-4pm/12noon-8pm and a rotation of weekends (one every 12 weeks). The post will require travelling to patients' homes and day opportunities, so a car driver is essential with access to their own vehicle.
Main duties of the job
To carry out and interpret specialist assessments of the communication skills and needs of people with learning disabilities including those with complex/challenging needs and their carers when required.
To provide a community-based Speech and Language Therapy Service including Dysphagia to adults with Learning Disabilities within the South Essex area.
Person specification Education
Recognised Speech and Language Qualification – Degree or equivalent
HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist
Strong evidence of CPD (portfolio) to reflect specialist skill development
Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
Post Graduate Dysphagia Qualification or equivalent in-house training and log of supervised practice
Knowledge
Extensive knowledge of a broad range of approaches to the assessment and management of patients with swallowing difficulties
Experience of working with a wide range of acquired communication and swallowing disorders within an acute setting.
Experience of independently managing a complex and busy caseload with support and supervision from colleagues.
Experience of working within multidisciplinary teams
Experience of supervising/ supporting junior staff, students or assistants.
Personal Qualities
Shares the Trust’s Beliefs and models this in their attitude and behaviour.
Current driving licence
Ability to travel across sites and across Trust boundaries to attend meetings, etc.
