This role is a fantastic opportunity to work within a highly specialised multidisciplinary team as a Spinal Cord Injury Children and Young Peoples Clinical Nurse Specialist.

The successful applicant will be providing highly specialised care for spinal cord injured individuals from initial injury or diagnosis. This is through initial outreach care to the London Network, leading to admission or outpatient review and beyond. Providing care through successful transition into adult services.

We are looking for a nurse who wants to work in a well-supported team and one who would like to consolidate their knowledge and skills in care for spinal cord injured children and one who is able to teach those teams looking after them. Previous experience of spinal cord injury or spinal services would be extremely desirable.

To apply you should have experience of working as a Band 6 in a children and adolescent ward with spinal cord injured children or have completed or working towards the Spinal Cord Injury qualification. Working in spinal services would also be beneficial.

You should be an excellent communicator with an eye for detail. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a commitment to highly specialist nursing in this field as well as being prepared to uphold the values of the RNOH NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

Assessment of Children and Young People (CYP) with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) care needs, planning, implementing and evaluating family centred care. You will be required to become an expert in the following areas:

Teaching and supervising unqualified staff, registered nurses, non-nursing staff and parents or guardians in the care of a CYP with SCI. Maintaining and setting high standards of care within the department and externally in the community and Major Trauma Centres (MTC). Acting as a role model and leader to nursing staff in the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Supporting CYP and their families with newly diagnosed SCI in the MTC. Working closely with the admission and discharge team on the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre. Providing follow up care to CYP with SCI in the community, schools and follow up outpatient clinics. Acting upon any safeguarding concerns in accordance with RNOH policy. Working autonomously across the CYP ward, London Spinal Cord Injury Centre, outpatients and community setting.

About us

The Children & Young Person's Clinical Nurse Specialist works within the adult Clinical Nurse Specialists in the Multi-Disciplinary Spinal Outreach and Community Liaison Team. Here lies a wealth of spinal cord injury experience from the highly specialised and well established team.

The CYP CNS is an important and valued part of the CYP services at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. The CYP CNS works within a smaller highly specialised CYP trained Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) responsible for managing a large acute and community based caseload as well as up to 3 SCI in-patients at any one time on the dedicated CYP ward at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. The CYP MDT consists of a Rehabilitation Consultant, a Consultant Paediatrician, a Consultant Psychiatrist, an Orthotist, a Physiotherapist, an Occupational Therapist, a Re-integration Practitioner, a Teacher-in-Charge and a Dietician. The CYP CNS is responsible for the smooth planning and running of the monthly or bi-monthly CYP MDT Clinic.

The role involves supporting new acute spinal injured CYP patients by outreach visits and carefully planning efficient transfers from the major trauma centres or from specialist spinal services, such as Great Ormond Street.

The CYP CNS has a role in patient, family and staff education. This can range from ward based or bedside teaching to more formal study days to a wider audience across the London sector.

Qualifications

RGN/RN Paediatrics At least 2 years at Band 6 Diploma/Degree

Desirable

Dual paediatric and general nursing registration Experience with SCI First Degree or studying towards a Masters Degree or Spinal Cord injury course
