Job Description Fugro are recruiting for a Staff Laboratory Engineer to join the Geotechnical Laboratory based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. The advanced laboratory is one of the most technical and largest advanced laboratories in the world using state of the art equipment to analyse soil samples from client projects globally. After receiving the necessary training, your role will be to perform a number of advanced tests on the samples such as monotonic cyclic triaxial and simple shear tests in addition to resonant column and constant rate of strain consolidation tests. You will conduct the tests by using advanced computer control programs and recording data in handwritten format then entering it into a computer. You will also sometimes process and check the advanced tests as well as train new technicians in the laboratories. This job is for you if: You enjoy a role that offers daily challenges where no two days are the same, working on a variety of projects from the energy industries; You have high attention to detail enjoy practical work and can work to specific standards and applied specifications. You would like the opportunity to work offshore as a laboratory technician once or twice a year for 4 weeks at a time (although this isn’t a requirement of the role). On a daily basis you will be a part of a small, dedicated laboratory team of advanced test technicians. Here’s what a typical day would be like: You will prepare soil samples from projects globally for testing and then run a series of advanced tests as prescribed by the client over a 6 to 8-week period; You will monitor testing, inputting various stages and update the program team on the progress. Problem solving testing. Equipment maintenance and calibrations. Please note that whilst this position requires a 37.5hr week, the company may be able to offer flexibility around working hours and would be happy to discuss this at interview. However, weekend working, and overtime will be required from time to time. Who we’re looking for: Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade A to C including Maths and Science and 1 A-Level grade A-C in a Maths or Science subject or equivalent qualifications; Strong MS Excel knowledge; Excellent numeracy and literacy; Troubleshooting skills; Ability to work unsupervised and take ownership of tasks; Excellent in teamwork and communication within the team; Strong organizational skills. Competent use of Email; Desirable Experience of working in a geotechnical laboratory or within the geotechnical industry; A degree in a physical science especially courses that have soil mechanics or mechanics of materials (strength of materials). Alternatively, significant relevant experience; Good knowledge of soil behaviour and foundation engineering issues.
