We are responsible for providing a specialist ophthalmic service for the population of County Durham and Darlington across two sites, which encompasses Darlington Memorial Hospital and Bishop Auckland Hospital.
The department will offer the successful candidate an opportunity to develop in your role as a staff nurse within the ophthalmology team. The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills, a high sense of professionalism, and a strong belief in the value of teamwork. You will help formulate and carry out effective care for our patients and ensure it is delivered to the highest possible level.
You will have the opportunity to gain experience in all areas of Ophthalmology, which includes eye clinic, eye urgent care, and the injection rooms.
The post is predominantly Monday to Friday, but we do work in urgent care on Saturday and Sunday mornings and on bank holidays apart from Christmas and New Year, which is all done on a rotational basis.
Main duties of the job
Ophthalmology has specialist skills in all areas. You will learn how to perform visual acuity tests, visual field testing, look after patients in the injection room, and learn triage skills for eye urgent care. Opportunities to learn pre-assessment are also available.
Nurses also cannulate for angiography and give IV drugs.
Qualified nurses learn organizational skills by acting as the ward coordinator, and paperwork entails prepping the packs for each day's work.
