As part of the Kent Prison Healthcare contract awarded to Oxleas NHS Trust in 2022, we are looking for a compassionate, knowledgeable and motivated Substance Misuse Nurse to join our friendly team at HMP Swaleside.

Our healthcare team has a real impact on promoting health and well-being to those in prison, and we pride ourselves on using skills and strategies that instill hope for patients' future resettlement back into the community. We directly deliver Mental Health, Physical Health, Pharmacy, and Clinical Substance Misuse in an integrated healthcare delivery model to provide effective and responsive care to improve well-being and support better outcomes in the future.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

To provide specialist substance misuse care to offenders and to work as part of an integrated and multi-disciplinary health service. Responsibilities include:

Delivering a range of specialist interventions at primary and secondary care level, including referral management, screening assessment, triage, and evidence-based interventions. Facilitating one-to-one and group work, assertive outreach interventions, and managing a mixed and challenging caseload. Contributing to alternatives to the need for inpatient admission and assisting with early discharge from inpatient services through clinical interventions and complex case management. Performing robust assessments, screenings, and interventions for offenders with substance misuse concerns. Ensuring timely delivery of assessments and interventions, contributing to service performance targets. Collaborating with other specialist services for continuity of care and through the gate arrangements. Working closely with community mental health teams (CMHTs) to ensure appropriate sharing of information and continuity of care. Providing comprehensive reports and mental health expertise to multi-agency public protection panels (MAPPA), police, probation services, solicitors, and court liaison teams. Providing supervision to junior staff and receiving supervision as directed. Participating in resource centre services, delivering group therapy and specialist activities. Working in a psychologically minded way with offenders to achieve their agreed goals and quality health outcomes.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting in order to work in a Prison Setting. This will be completed as part of the pre-employment checks through Oxleas and the prison vetting team.

Person Specification

Essential Registered Nurse Relevant post-registration training in one of the following areas: Substance misuse/dual diagnosis, Psychological therapies, RCGP Part 1 Certificate

Experience

Essential Minimum 2 years of working post-qualification as a Registered Nurse Experience in prison or secure settings Post-qualification experience in working within substance misuse services

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Essential Clear understanding of Risk Assessment principles and procedures. Knowledge of substance misuse assessment, identification, and management of withdrawal symptoms. Ability to handle complex and sensitive material.
