Full time, fixed-term contract with an option for some working from home and some flexibility in hours. The Role We now have an exciting new role for an outstanding Sustainability Manager. Reporting to the Head of Sustainability, with the support of the Executive, Senior Management team and Board of Trustees, you will: manage Chester Zoo’s programme of sustainability initiatives in line with its Sustainability Policy and working with colleagues to develop procedural guidance, associated action plans and deliver projects, in support of the sustainability targets: - To be carbon net zero in scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030 - Towards a zero waste operation by 2030 - Procurement of deforestation free commodities in all major supply chains - Achieve net gain for UK biodiversity, with at least 30% of zoo owned land managed for UK biodiversity by 2030 develop, manage and drive initiatives for environmental sustainability throughout the organisation. This includes the promotion of carbon management and energy reduction/efficiency activities, initiatives to improve waste management, the development of sustainable procurement practices and identifying and preparing bids for external funding opportunities, where available. provide specialist, technical expertise to support embedding sustainability across the organisation, enabling Chester Zoo to improve its sustainability performance across all its activities and to address sustainability matters through consultation and communications with stakeholders. deliver reliable data on sustainability in support of agreed targets and in line with external reporting requirements. We’re looking for someone who can: Manage a programme of activities to continue embedding environmental sustainability throughout Chester Zoo, with the support of the senior managers. This will include ensuring appropriate training and engagement on sustainability issues across the zoo through staff inductions, staff development programmes, sustainability awareness events and promotional campaigns to bring about change in attitudes, culture and behaviour. Work with the Sustainability Steering Group and Leading Sustainability Groups (led by sustainability target leads), to coordinate and manage sustainability activities across the organisation. This will include producing presentations which update on progress, highlighting/discussing key challenges and opportunities and supporting the Head of Sustainability and Corporate Director in producing updates for the Board of Trustees. Alongside the sustainability target leads and the Head of Sustainability, manage a structured approach to progressing work on each of the sustainability targets through Delivery Groups. This will include working across the organisation and its site, establishing relationships, developing procedures, guidance and associated action plans and programmes of work in order to deliver against the sustainability targets set and wider sustainability legislation and regulation. Working with a Sustainability Officer to programme, manage and drive initiatives for environmental sustainability throughout the organisation, particularly focussed on the delivery of carbon management and energy reduction/efficiency activities, the improvement of waste management and the adoption of sustainable procurement practices, through both physical interventions and behaviour change campaigns. Identify and secure external investment to support delivery of the Sustainability targets, including supporting oversight and management of the budget for sustainability, existing corporate partnership arrangements and preparing funding applications/proposals. Act as a subject matter expert on sustainability and advise on best practice in relation to sustainability internally across the organisation and externally supporting the public affairs team in developing position statements, policy asks and consultation responses and having involvement in the BIAZA sustainability working group. Work with the business reporting team to ensure all appropriate data is captured and understood to fulfil regulatory and organisational reporting requirements, including ESOS reporting and reporting in annual report. For a period of maternity leave of the Head of Sustainability, the Sustainability Manager will report to the Corporate Director, manage the Sustainability budget alongside the Corporate Director and will have line management responsibility for the Sustainability Officer. The Package • Temporary fixed term contract to 31 December 2025 (with possibility of extension into 2026) • Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday (typically 8:30am-5pm, with some flexibility) • Salary - £43,672.30 per annum • The role is based at Chester Zoo onsite (minimum 60% per week) with the opportunity for hybrid working (working from home) up to 40% per week. • 33 days annual leave plus the option to buy or sell up to 5 days • Staff pass so you can visit the zoo during your time off, plus multiple complimentary tickets for your friends and family • Cycle to work scheme • Healthcare plan and employee assistance programme • Discounted gym membership • Discounts on cinema tickets, restaurants, high street shops and more via Perks • Pension scheme with generous employer contributions up to 9% Our Requirements Relevant qualifications or experience, e.g. degree level qualification in sustainability, sustainable energy or waste or an environmental field, or equivalent experience Experience of leading results driven sustainability initiatives within a medium/large organisation, including working with diverse teams to deliver results Knowledge and subject matter expertise on sustainability, as relevant to the role, including an awareness of external drivers, influences, concepts and new technology that could influence our sustainability work, e.g. legislation, regulation, emerging technologies, techniques and industry best practice. Experience of developing written communications, behaviour change campaigns, plans (project level and long term strategic) and business cases for sustainability interventions. Experience of working with stakeholders across organisations to achieve results, including governance structures, e.g. delivery groups, steering groups. Experience of collating, quality assuring and presenting clear, organised data to deliver organisational and regulatory reporting on sustainability, including carbon emissions, energy, waste and procurement information. Experience of managing people and budgets. Member of or working towards a recognised relevant professional body, e.g. IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) or similar would be an advantage.
