We are currently looking for nurses/ODP's with theatre experience, especially in orthopaedics. We are recruiting Band 5 Theatre Practitioners to join our highly committed team across theatres. We are open to offer full time, part time and flexible opportunities.

The team at the Royal Orthopaedic NHS Foundation Trust provides a holistic approach when caring for a wide range of patients with complex musculoskeletal, spinal and oncology conditions, many of whom require high dependency care.

As one of the country's few Elective Orthopaedic Specialist Hospitals, 'The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital' receives referrals & transfers only and therefore has no 'Emergency Department'. This allows our nurses & ODPs to focus their attention on the delivery of truly holistic and patient centred care.

Main duties of the job

With multi-professional team working we are continually enhancing the patient journey and experience with high quality, evidence-based care delivery. This includes, Critical Care Outreach, Tissue Viability, Safeguarding, Infection Prevention and Control and many more. We even have our own community service, Royal Orthopaedic Community Service (ROCS).

We have a strong commitment to education and training and will provide a comprehensive package of learning and skills-based competency, supported by senior clinical staff. All new starters will be offered a period of supernumerary practice. If you are newly qualified with recent theatres experience, you will be allocated a Preceptor to support you and access the Trust Preceptorship process.

The post holder will: Practice autonomously and be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate, person centred care. Ensure a high standard of patient care is delivered in an effective and efficient manner, reflecting the values and ethos of The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Be responsible for assessing care needs of patients. Planning, implementation and the evaluation of these programmes without direct supervision.

Job description

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will: Work at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviours, revalidation and relevant professional guidelines, independently / autonomously and at times without direct supervision. Be accountable for their own professional actions and those delegated to others. Ensure accurate assessment of patient care needs, development of care plans, implementing and evaluating care based on the patient needs. Achieve and maintain competence in identified mandatory and statutory training develop and maintain clinical competencies, skills and knowledge which relate to the area of clinical practice (i.e. venepuncture, cannulation, ECG, urethral catheterisation and any other relevant duties). Respond to patients, relatives and carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required. Take charge of the practice setting as required. Assume responsibility for undertaking tasks delegated by the nominated line / shift coordinator. Contribute to the development of service and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience and outcome and ensure standards of care are monitored and maintained within the organisation. Delegate appropriately to and supervise the work of other staff registered or unregistered and students. Assist with the induction and orientation and subsequent development of junior staff within the ward or department. Maintain accurate nursing records ensuring all documentation is completed accurately and promptly. Administer medications as described by local policy and in line with the NMC or HCPC standards for medicines management. Adhere to organisational policies and procedures. In accordance with individual patient care, and utilising appropriate computer software and/or monitoring equipment, on a daily basis undertake and record patients observations.

This is not an exhaustive list of duties and a regular review will take place with the postholder as part of their ongoing development and performance management.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential Current or pending NMC/HCPC Registration in the case of newly qualified nurses/ODP's. Diploma / Degree in Nursing/ODP Practice or equivalent experience. GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.

Experience

Essential Recent clinical experience within theatres. Evidence of ongoing professional development.

Desirable Orthopaedic experience. Recent acute hospital experience.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential Evidence of ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of the following: Time management & role modelling. Knowledge of the changing NHS, clinical governance. Audit & Research. Supervision of the care of perioperative patients. Ability to use own initiative and make sound clinical judgements. Clinical competence. Basic IT Skills. Have or willing to undertake core skills relevant to area of work Cannulation, Venepuncture, Urethral Catheterisation male and females, IV therapy.
