The councils Passenger Transport service is currently recruiting to the position of Transport Supervisor. The role will be based in our Special Transport team which delivers a complex range of transport services, providing special educational and adult welfare transport to schools, colleges and other establishments throughout Herefordshire and beyond. Through a network of approximately 40 internal and external staff, and contractors, Special Transport provides a daily service to 400 clients with a diverse range of additional needs.

The main duties of the Transport Supervisor will be: To effectively supervise special educational needs (SEN) drivers and passenger assistants, ensuring consistent and appropriate support including assisting the team manager with staff development and training. To carry out regular formal and informal performance evaluations of external transport staff, ensuring services are provided that comply with council policies, national guidance, and legislation. To act as the link between the work of the SEN transport office and that of the external transport staff, representing the service at school and adult day care establishments. To supervise and assist pupils with special educational and medical needs on Home to School transport. To assist the team manager with the effective administration of SEN transport. To ensure an appropriate response to urgent operational issues as necessary. The Transport Supervisor will be responsible for supervising approximately 35 Drivers and Passenger Assistants, ensuring an effective link between the work of the transport office and that of external transport staff. The role will be part office-based at the councils Plough Lane offices, or from home, and part external, managing transport staff at schools and colleges around the County. A driving licence will be essential as you will need to drive between sites using a provided pool car.

As well as managing transport staff, you will also need to work in the role of Passenger Assistant yourself, providing supervisory cover on school transport vehicles to cover for periods of staff sickness and absence as necessary. The hours are approximately 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday, with some flexibility, and you will also provide out of hours cover via mobile phone, coordinating responses to urgent operational and staff issues.

You will need to be an excellent communicator with the ability to efficiently supervise staff, manage time and prioritise work. Co-ordinating a large number of remote workers will require excellent people management skills and the ability to effectively develop and manage a team.

You should be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the importance of operational efficiency and excellent customer service. The work involves issues of a sensitive and confidential nature, and applicants will need to display a clear understanding of the need for complete confidentiality.
