Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant Specialism of Paediatric Orthopaedics An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultant to join the expanding Trauma and Orthopaedic Service at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

The post holder will complement the existing team of Paediatric Orthopaedic Consultants at MTW, providing general Orthopaedic trauma service as well as sub-specialising in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. A special interest in the management of developmental dysplasia of the hip and hip preservation surgery is desirable. The post holder must have completed a Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship.

The paediatric orthopaedic service at MTW has expanded continually since 2002 with patients referred from neighbouring trusts as well as locally. This tertiary referral service continues to expand with some 40% of referrals from out of area. There are satellite services to surrounding areas as part of a paediatric orthopaedic network. There are currently Ponseti and one-stop DDH clinics at both sites in addition to multidisciplinary clinics for neuromuscular disorders and an upper limb cerebral palsy service. Outpatient services are provided on both the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells site. Paediatric orthopaedic day case surgery takes place at both Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone, and inpatient surgery at Tunbridge Wells.

This is an RCS Approved Post.

Main duties of the job The post is for paediatric orthopaedic surgery. There will be an expectation to perform elective and trauma surgery, and provide specialist expertise in paediatric trauma. Fracture and elective clinics are held in Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone and peripheral hospitals. Day surgery lists and inpatient elective lists currently occur in Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone, and trauma lists at Tunbridge Wells. The successful candidate will join the General Trauma and Orthopaedic On-call rota.

About us The Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 480,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. Maidstone Hospital has a stand-alone Orthopaedic Theatre with a 12 bedded Orthopaedic ward attached. There is a day surgery unit and elective and fracture clinics run daily. The Tunbridge Wells Hospital is located in Pembury adjacent to the A21. It is the first NHS hospital where all main wards are comprised entirely of single rooms with en suite bathrooms. The hospital is a Trauma Unit in the South East London, Kent & Medway Trauma Network, and has a close working relationship with King's College Hospital which is the major trauma centre for the network. There are 2 dedicated elective Orthopaedic theatres, a trauma theatre which runs 8.30 am to 6 pm seven days a week, and every weekday morning there is an additional Consultant delivered specialist trauma list. Members of the department are heavily involved in the regional orthopaedic teaching programme and in the running of local ATLS courses.
