The University of York exists for public good. This statement - the first in our

University Strategy

- signals that we combine academic excellence with social purpose. We are a world-leading institution and a member of the prestigious Russell Group, bringing excellent research and teaching together with powerful engagement with the communities around us. Our founding values of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, anchored by the highest academic standards, are as true today as they were when the University first opened its doors 60 years ago. At a time of transformative opportunities and challenges for UK higher education, we are seeking to appoint a new Treasurer and Chair of our Finance Committee. This role is crucial in providing strategic oversight and guidance through our Council, contributing to the institution's mission and long-term goals. The ideal candidate would bring their Board-level experience providing knowledge of finance and audit to the Council's portfolio of governance oversight and advice to the Executive. An understanding of the current challenges in the higher education sector would be preferable. We are looking for an exceptional individual who can understand our history and evolution as an organisation and help contribute to creating a strong and compelling vision for the future, all in the context of robust and responsible financial oversight and governance. With a turnover of £533 million, 20,000 students and almost 5,000 FTE staff, the University makes significant contributions to the economy, society and culture through research and its impact, addressing some of the key challenges of our time. Working closely with the Chair of Council, Council members are collectively responsible for the effective stewardship and strategic direction of the University, as well as the safeguarding of its mission and values. The ideal candidates will demonstrate an understanding of governance at board level, a commitment to higher education and will bring their skills, knowledge and experience in support of York’s vision and purpose. The University of York strives to achieve a Council that is representative of the rich and diverse communities we serve. We particularly welcome applications from female candidates and candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds or other under-represented groups, as these are currently not well-represented on Council, its committees and leadership within the University.
