Are you a passionate and qualified veterinary professional looking to specialize in ophthalmology? Join the dynamic and supportive team at Rowe Veterinary Group for an exciting 15-month Veterinary Ophthalmology Internship, designed to provide a solid foundation in ophthalmic medicine, surgery, and patient care.

Focus on your future

Support the veterinary and nursing ophthalmology team with inpatient care and day-to-day operations. Develop core skills in ophthalmic anaesthesia, theatre preparation, patient management, and diagnostic techniques. Attend consults, perform ophthalmic examinations, and assist with emergency triage. Undertake self-directed microsurgery training and live surgical cases under supervision. Participate in at least one clinical study and present findings at an ophthalmology meeting. Mentor subsequent interns during the final three months of the internship.

Minimum Requirements Qualified MRCVS with at least 2 years post-qualification experience. Excellent small animal medical and surgical skills, including anaesthesia. Empathy for clients, patients, colleagues, and referring veterinary surgeons.

Advantageous Qualifications Competency in ophthalmic diagnostics and prior surgical experience. Experience managing ophthalmic cases in general practice or a referral setting. Previous internship, especially with ophthalmology exposure. Postgraduate qualifications or active study in surgery, anaesthesia, medicine, or ophthalmology.

Working Hours Standard Hours: 45 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8 am to 7 pm). On-call Commitment: 1 weekend every 3 weeks, alternating weeks of weekday on-call. No requirement to stay on-site but must be within 1-hour travel distance.

Internship Structure The internship progresses through five stages, focusing on: Veterinary anaesthesia, theatre management, and ophthalmic patient care. Advanced ophthalmic examinations and diagnostic techniques. Surgical skills development, including enucleation, keratotomy, and microsurgery. Case management and emergency triage, with independent consulting responsibilities. Mentoring new interns and engaging in clinical research.
