Avalon Annex are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and hard-working Band 7 into a secondment as Ward Manager. Avalon Annex is based at Springfield University Hospital, housed within Avalon ward, a 19 bedded inpatient eating disorder unit. This is an individualised healthcare provision for one person, cared for on enhanced observation throughout the day. Working in the annex space is an innovative opportunity to collaborate with support services. The ward staff spaces include offices and break areas. Bespoke training will be offered to support staff. One unique opportunity within this role is working with a wide multi-disciplinary team across several services and trusts. The service user has an MDT made up of a ward manager, nursing staff, consultant, OT, 1:1 psychology, and family support. Main duties of the job
As a Ward Manager for Avalon Annex, you will develop a thorough understanding of the adults inpatient eating disorder model, take a lead in developing policies and protocols, and be responsible for recruitment, supervision, and monitoring effectiveness. You will ensure care is reflective of evidence-based practice within the framework of clinical governance. You will manage complaints, support the team in being ready for CQC, and maintain high levels of morale within the team. Job responsibilities
Administrative
Take responsibility for the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults and Children. Coordinate bed management for the ward and monitor referrals with medical staff. Lead in the recruitment, selection, and retention of staff in the clinical area. Ensure the ward is adequately staffed within the agreed budget and nursing resources are used efficiently. Participate in budget setting and report concerns to the General Manager. Establish effective communication within the service and external departments. Ensure ward hygiene and cleanliness, reporting deficiencies to the Operational Manager. Ensure systems are in place for the safekeeping of patients' property. Implement, disseminate, and monitor Directorate and Trust-wide policies. Investigate complaints, accidents, and critical incidents and prepare timely reports. Provide monthly reports to the Operational Manager as required. Management
Work closely with the Operational Manager and Modern Matron in delivering high-quality mental health care. Manage the in-patient nursing team. Ensure effective management of the e-roster for consistency in nursing care. Manage the wards expenditure budget effectively. Provide information to the Operational Manager for performance reporting. Review the overall provision and development of service delivery. Monitor sickness and absence of nursing staff. Ensure an appropriate Clinical and managerial supervision structure for all nursing staff. Ensure all nursing staff have an annual development review. Monitor continuing professional development for all nursing staff. Represent the service at various management meetings. Review and develop policies, procedures, and protocols for the service. Clinical/Professional
Responsible for the assessment of care needs and development of care programs. Work with the General Manager/Modern Matron to maintain high standards of clinical practice. Ensure the named nurse system is operational on the ward. Ensure after-care is arranged for each service user on discharge. Ensure all staff are aware of current risk assessment procedures. Regularly audit interventions carried out by nursing staff. Ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation. Training and Development
Work with the Operational Manager and Modern Matron on clinical governance initiatives. Ensure Trust and local induction training is completed for all new staff. Develop and implement supervision and development reviews on the ward. Ensure clinical areas receive regular educational audits. Person Specification
