You will join a supportive and friendly team, and you collaborate with the Matron, and the Deputy Sister / Deputy Charge Nurses, Practice Development Team (PDT) and the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to provide the highest quality of assessment and evaluated care required to support and enhance the patient experience.

Main duties of the job

You will ensure that the ward provides excellent standards of nursing care to maintain patient safety. You will act as a role model at all times, be motivated and lead your team effectively.

You must work well under pressure, and you will be expected to communicate closely with other members of the MDT. You will be responsible for managing a team of nurses and HCA which will include sickness management, appraisals and other HR processes. As the ward manager you will be involved in dealing with complaints as they arise and also managing conflict.

In addition, you will provide nursing leadership within the department, ensuring an effective quality nursing service, with responsibility for standards of nursing care and patient safety.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care within the standards and philosophy of the department. Ensure patient safety at all times, and that patients and relatives needs are met in a courteous, helpful and compassionate manner. Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of patient care. Promote professional, positive and effective relationships between the multidisciplinary team in the clinical environment. Maintain current and proficient healthcare skills within the Scope of Professional Practice framework, and maintain a personal portfolio in line with revalidation/CPD requirements. Be aware of national and local issues and trends in the development and provision of the services. Assist Matron in addressing issues pertinent to the departments management. Promote the ward through professional activities and publication of work. Develop and nurture relationships with key personnel at other sites to enhance the patients' journey and maintain safety on the Ward. Deputise for the Matron in his/her absence. Take responsibility for shift management, ensuring a safe and appropriate skill mix. Have responsibility for specific aspects of nursing or departmental management negotiated with Matron. Provide direction, negotiate objectives and appraise junior members of staff using the Trusts appraisal programme. Ensure achievement of identified objectives is encouraged, facilitated and monitored, taking remedial action where necessary. Be involved in the development and maintenance of clinical standards, and audit of clinical activities, leading on changes needed as a result of audit findings. Be aware of financial constraints facing the Division and Clinical Business Unit, and ensure departmental resources are used appropriately. Lead the recruitment of departmental staff, and engage in activities to promote the retention of staff. Take responsibility for specific development projects negotiated with the Matron, and initiate, manage and evaluate change in liaison with senior colleagues. Assist the Matron in the positive management of complaints, and initiate the investigation into adverse events, taking any immediate appropriate actions. Ensure personnel within the ward adhere to Trust policies, and take initial disciplinary actions if necessary in liaison with Human Resources advisors. Liaise with other agencies and professionals to maintain good service provision, and promote a culture which encourages the achievement of government set standards in the interest of improved patient care. Maintain an innovative, effective learning environment and encourage learning within formal and informal settings.
