Business Unit
You will be based within AmcoGiffen’s Aviation business unit in Birmingham, supporting the delivery of civil engineering works at Birmingham Airport and across the wider aviation portfolio.
The Aviation team delivers airside and landside civil engineering works across live operational airport environments, supporting long‑term frameworks, maintenance programmes and capital improvement schemes for major UK airports.
Typical works may include:
- Airfield pavements, runways, taxiways and aprons
- Drainage, ducting and buried services
- Structures and concrete repairs
- Asset maintenance and planned renewals
- Enabling works supporting major airport upgrades
Working within an active airport environment offers a unique and exciting start to a civil engineering career, with a strong focus on safety, quality and programme delivery.
The Role
As an Apprentice Civil Engineer, you will form part of a project delivery team working on live aviation infrastructure projects. You will learn directly from experienced engineers and site teams while studying towards your degree qualification.
You will be supported through a structured development programme, combining technical learning with practical experience in a highly regulated and safety‑critical environment.
Your day‑to‑day activities may include:
- Assisting site engineers with setting‑out, surveys and engineering checks
- Supporting quality inspections and ensuring works meet client and regulatory standards
- Assisting with daily site records, permits and reports
- Monitoring health, safety and environmental compliance, particularly within airside areas
- Supporting the preparation of method statements and risk assessments
- Liaising with site teams, subcontractors and supervision staff
- Gaining an understanding of airside safety procedures and operational constraints
By the end of your apprenticeship, you will have achieved a recognised engineering degree alongside valuable hands‑on experience in the aviation sector.
Training & Qualification
You will study towards the Civil Engineer (Degree) Apprenticeship, delivered through part‑time or day‑release university attendance alongside your role.
