About the role

The Assistant Director (Grand Challenges) provides senior professional leadership for the Intercultural Communication Theme within UCL’s flagship, institution-wide programme. The role applies the university’s collective expertise to major societal challenges while shaping UCL’s educational offer and institutional practices. It also has responsibility for leading programme-level monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL).

Working with the GC Director and relevant Pro-Vice-Provosts, the Assistant Director will design, deliver and evaluate a five-year plan for the Theme. This includes setting priorities and deliverables, embedding diversity and inclusion, and establishing processes to review activities and assess impact.

The plan must align with external stakeholder needs, UCL’s strategic priorities, and evolving internal and external contexts. The Assistant Director will oversee implementation, contribute to cross-GC planning, and lead Theme management ( FTE).

The postholder will also lead the MEL function ( FTE), providing oversight of the programme-wide M&E plan, directing data analysis and visualisation activity, and building capability across the team to support confident, evidence-informed decision-making and organisational resilience.

About you

Things you'll need in order to do this job include:

  • Experience of having successfully planned and delivered a major programme in a complex academic or knowledge-focused environment
  • An understanding of the challenges associated with cross-disciplinary and cross-sector collaboration
  • Demonstrable experience of project / task review and evidence-based action-planning on numerous projects simultaneously with multiple stakeholders
  • Experience of leading an effective project team and successful challenge-based research and/or knowledge exchange activities
  • An extensive track record of collaboration, within an organisation and with external partners ( corporate, academic, government, policy or charities)
  • Evidence of writing or editing for varied audiences, or of managing a portfolio of impact-generating outputs
  • Evidence of establishing credibility with and influencing multiple internal and external stakeholders at all levels, to deliver solutions that meet organisational strategic objectives
  • Experience of attracting, managing and/or disbursing funding
