BSL Teaching Assistant – Deaf Provision (Primary – mainstream)
Job description
Job Title: BSL Teaching Assistant – Deaf Provision (Primary – mainstream school)
Location: Birmingham
Contract: Full-time, Long-term
Start Date: ASAP or September start available
Looking for a role where your BSL skills truly matter?
This is one of those positions where you’ll feel the impact of your work every single day. We’re working with a brilliant mainstream primary school, proudly rated Outstanding by Ofsted, that has a well-established on-site deaf learning provision. They’re now looking for a BSL Teaching Assistant to join the team full-time.
If you’re confident using British Sign Language and love supporting pupils to access learning in a way that works for them, you’ll fit right in here.
What your day might look like:
You’ll be supporting pupils within the deaf provision, helping them access lessons, build confidence, and feel fully included in school life.
That could mean:
- Translating classroom teaching into BSL
- Supporting communication between pupils, staff, and peers
- Working 1:1 or in small groups
- Helping pupils stay engaged, settled, and ready to learn
- Being that calm, familiar face pupils rely on
It’s hands-on, rewarding, and never dull.
Why this school?
This isn’t a “figure it out as you go” kind of place.
- Dedicated deaf provision with experienced staff
- Supportive leadership team who genuinely value support staff
- Clear routines and structure, no chaos, no guesswork
- A real focus on inclusion, communication, and pupil wellbeing
In short, it’s the kind of school where support staff aren’t just “extra hands”, they’re essential.
What we’re looking for:
- BSL Level 2 or above (essential)
- Experience working with children or young people
- A calm, patient, and encouraging approach
- Someone who builds trust easily and communicates with warmth
- A genuine interest in supporting deaf learners
If you’ve worked in a school, SEND setting, or similar, great. If not, but you’ve got strong BSL and the right attitude, we still want to hear from you.
The long-term bit (because this one’s got legs)
This isn’t a short cover role. The school is looking for someone who can become part of the team, build relationships, and stay long-term. For the right person, this could turn into something really stable and rewarding.
