Shape high-value defence contracts that protect what matters most

At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Commercial Specialist at our Devonport Royal Dockyard site.

The role

As a Commercial Specialist, you’ll be a trusted partner at the heart of our commercial team, providing expert oversight and governance across complex, high‑value defence contracts. This is a varied and rewarding role where your judgement, integrity and commercial insight will directly influence programme success and long‑term value.

Day-to-day, you’ll work on regulated and strategically important contracts, including Qualifying Defence Contracts, supporting bids, contract change, negotiation and risk management. Alongside developing strong stakeholder relationships, you’ll build your own professional credibility while contributing to outcomes that matter to society.

  • Providing commercial governance and advice across bids, tenders, contracts and change activity
  • Managing contract amendments, including producing change orders and assessing supporting evidence
  • Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders and customers, negotiating price, terms and scope
  • Embedding commercial policies, guidance and best practice across the business
  • Supporting the Commercial Manager by deputising when required and developing team capability
  • This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with a minimum of 3 days in the office/onsite.

Essential experience of the Commercial Specialist

  • Proven experience managing large, complex contracts in a regulated environment
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate independently and manage customer relationships
  • Strong communication, presentation and stakeholder engagement skills
  • High attention to detail with the ability to identify and mitigate commercial risk
  • Experience working with defence or infrastructure contracts is advantageous
  • Qualifications for the Commercial Specialist

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject such as Business or Law, or equivalent professional experience
  • Membership of a relevant commercial or contracting body would be advantageous
  • Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
