A high performing and well-respected secondary school in Weymouth is seeking an ambitious and strategic Head of Science to lead its successful department. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Science specialist to shape curriculum direction, drive attainment, and lead a collaborative team within a structured and academically focused environment. The school is open to appointing for either an April 2026 or September 2026 start, depending on candidate availability.

Science is a core strength of the school, with consistently strong GCSE outcomes and a well-established A Level provision across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The department benefits from modern laboratories, well-sequenced schemes of work, and a culture of high expectations for both staff and pupils.

The Role

  • Leading and managing the Science department across KS3, KS4, and KS5

  • Driving high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment across all disciplines

  • Developing and refining an ambitious, knowledge-rich Science curriculum

  • Monitoring pupil progress and implementing targeted strategies to raise attainment

  • Line managing and mentoring teaching and support staff within the department

  • Overseeing laboratory compliance, practical provision, and health & safety standards

  • Managing departmental budgets and resource allocation

  • Contributing to whole-school improvement planning and leadership initiatives

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • A degree in a Science discipline

  • Proven experience teaching Science at secondary level, including examination classes

  • Prior middle leadership experience or readiness to step into a Head of Department role

  • A strong track record of raising attainment and improving outcomes

  • Excellent organisational, strategic, and communication skills

  • The ability to inspire both staff and pupils within a high-expectations culture

Salary

  • MPS/UPS + TLR or Leadership Scale (dependent on experience and responsibility)
