Principal Bridge Engineer

Principal Bridge Engineer focuses on assisting the bridge manager with the management and supervision of internal design teams, sub‑consultants, and subcontractors.

What the role involves

• Assisting the Bridge Manager with the management and supervision of internal design teams, sub‑consultants, and subcontractors.
• Oversee outline and detailed design of bridge maintenance schemes, including technical approval in principle (AIP).
• Supervise the assessment of bridges and the design of maintenance, strengthening, or refurbishment schemes.
• Manage the preparation and submission of Departures from Standard where required.
• Support contract award processes.
• Managing the financial performance of individual schemes.

Skills and requirements

• Degree‑qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Pension scheme with up to 6% employer match.

Candidate fit

• Maintain over 2,000 km of Scotland’s trunk road network, delivering a wide range of services to help keep Scotland moving safely and efficiently.
• On behalf of Transport Scotland, BEAR Scotland manages over 750 structures across the South East Trunk Road Network, including a number of large and complex bridges.
• Design, procurement, and construction management of bridge maintenance schemes.
