Job description

Write a short description of your company, a boilerplate of the business, service or product that you offer. Include your business idea and the target audience. This text is primarily supposed to be descriptive, not selling.

A well-established independent co-educational school in York is seeking a talented and committed Teacher of Mathematics to join its high-performing department. The school is known for strong academic outcomes, small class teaching and a culture that balances intellectual challenge with excellent pastoral care.

Mathematics is a core strength within the school, with consistently high GCSE and A-Level results and a strong uptake of Further Mathematics in the Sixth Form. Students are motivated, respectful and accustomed to engaging in thoughtful discussion and independent study.

The Role

This is a full teaching post across KS3–KS5, including GCSE and A-Level Mathematics. The successful candidate will deliver lessons that combine clarity of explanation with depth of understanding, ensuring students are challenged appropriately at every stage.

You will:

• Teach Mathematics across KS3–KS5, including A-Level
• Prepare students thoroughly for GCSE and A-Level examinations
• Support high-attaining pupils through stretch and challenge provision
• Contribute to enrichment activities such as Maths Challenge or problem-solving clubs
• Work collaboratively within a well-established Maths faculty

Small class sizes allow for personalised feedback and detailed support, particularly at Sixth Form level.

The Mathematics Department

The department operates within a dedicated teaching corridor with modern classrooms and shared digital resources. Schemes of work are structured and sequenced, while still allowing teachers autonomy in delivery style.

Department strengths include:

• Strong A-Level outcomes and Further Mathematics provision
• A clear focus on reasoning and problem-solving
• Consistent internal assessment and moderation
• A collaborative culture of planning and professional dialogue
• Opportunities to extend provision through competitions and enrichment

There is scope to further enhance stretch provision and develop cross-curricular STEM links.

The School

Located within easy reach of York city centre, the school combines historic architecture with modern teaching facilities. Students are academically ambitious and benefit from a strong tutor system and pastoral framework.

The wider school offers an extensive co-curricular programme including music, sport, drama and academic societies. Staff are encouraged to contribute to school life beyond the classroom.

Facilities include:

• Modernised teaching suites
• A dedicated Sixth Form centre
• Extensive sports and extracurricular spaces
• Well-equipped ICT and digital learning provision

Who We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will:

• Hold QTS or equivalent qualification
• Demonstrate strong subject knowledge through to A-Level
• Show the ability to stretch high-achieving students
• Value collaboration and academic dialogue
• Be willing to contribute to co-curricular life

Experience in the independent sector is desirable but not essential for a strong and academically capable teacher.

What’s On Offer

• Competitive independent school salary
• Small class sizes and engaged learners
• Strong professional development culture
• Access to excellent facilities
• A respected and well-established York independent school community

This is an excellent opportunity for a Mathematics specialist seeking an academically focused and professionally rewarding role within a prestigious independent school.
