Workshop Manager
Job description
Workshop Manager
Rochester
£50,000 – £55,000 +
About the Company
We’re working with a rapidly growing plant business with one of the largest and best-equipped workshops in the South. They’ve built a strong reputation for doing things properly - investing in equipment, diagnostics and their engineers.
This is not a “sit behind a desk” management role — they need a hands-on Workshop Manager who knows their way around machinery and can lead from the front.
The Role
This is a hands-on Workshop Manager / Chargehand / Foreman position - ideal for a senior engineer ready to step up or someone already leading a team but still wanting to stay on the tools.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Overseeing day-to-day workshop operations
- Supporting and mentoring engineers and apprentices
- Acting as the technical “go-to” and safety net for the team
- Ensuring work is completed to a high standard and in line with company processes
- Getting involved in diagnostics, fault finding and complex repairs when required
- Maintaining strong Health & Safety and workshop standards
You’ll be working closely with the Depot Manager, with mobile engineers operating externally.
The Equipment
You’ll be working on a serious fleet, including:
- Excavators and heavy plant (30–60 tonne)
- ADTs
- Crushers & screeners
- Advanced diagnostics (OEM software & laptops provided)
This is proper engineering - not just swapping parts. Full diagnostics, major repairs, electrical fault finding and strip-down work.
The Candidate
- Strong background in heavy plant (OEM/dealer experience ideal)
- Experience with brands like Komatsu, Volvo Construction Equipment or similar
- Solid electrical and diagnostic capability
- Experience as a senior engineer, chargehand or workshop supervisor
- Someone who leads from the front — not a purely admin manager
- Passion for engineering and developing others
- Ability to mentor apprentices and support the wider team
The Team
- 1 x Apprentice
- 2 x Fitters
- Mobile engineers reporting into the Depot Manager
You’ll be the technical backbone of the workshop.
What’s on Offer
- £50,000 – £55,000 basic
- Overtime available (OTE £55k – £65k)
- Monday to Friday — no weekend work
- Well-equipped, modern workshop
- Growing business with long-term opportunity
If you’re a senior plant engineer who’s ready to step up, or a hands-on Workshop Manager who still enjoys being on the tools — this is a serious opportunity.
